When Should I Throw Away My Makeup?

So when should I throw away my makeup?  We love our makeup.  It is an intimate part of our lives.  Some women won’t even go down the driveway to check the mailbox without it.  That is why makeup is difficult to throw it away, especially when it still looks useable.  The packages do not include expiration dates, so how do you know when it is time to throw away your makeup?

There are a few factors to take into consideration when deciding to replace your makeup.

1) Eye Health – If you have had an eye infection, it is imperative that you replace your eye makeup.  There are no exceptions.
2) What Type of Makeup – Generally, dry makeup lasts longer than wet makeup.  Here are some basic shelf-life guidelines:

  • Eye Pencils: 2 years
  • Mascara: 3 months
  • Powder Eye Shadow: 2 years
  • Liquid Eye Shadow: 1 year
  • Powder Blush: 2 years
  • Cream Blush: 1 year
  • Lipstick: 2 years
  • Foundation/Concealer: 12 months

3) How its Stored – How you treat your makeup can have a factor in how long it lasts.  Exposure to extreme hot or cold may spoil the makeup.  You should keep it at home and in a cool dry place.  Always use clean applicators, sponges, and brushes.  Never moisten makeup with saliva or water. This may introduce bacteria to the product and then to you.

Sometimes it is better to say goodbye to the old and hello to the new makeup.  You may save yourself from infection while continuing to look beautiful!
