Skin Fungus, Athlete’s Foot, Jock Itch Brevard County

For many people, Skin Fungus, Athlete’s Foot, Jock Itch Brevard County, the thought of having a fungus infection is stomach turning.  We don’t like to talk about it and may ignore initial symptoms.  But, it is important to know the basics of skin fungus because it is not that uncommon.

Skin fungus is mold.  There are many species of fungus.  One species of fungus can affect different parts of the body with different symptoms.  The most common type is called Dermatophytes. Dermatophytes eat keratin, a fibrous protein that makes up skin.  They grow and thrive in warm, moist conditions.

Skin fungus is contagious. It can spread between people, animals, clothes, or any object.  Visual signs that you have a fungal infection on your skin are scales or fissures between the toes, discoloration of the skin, or reddish rash with scales or bumps.  Itching is also a very common symptom of a fungal infection on the skin.

Skin fungus is treatable.  Creams and ointments are available over-the-counter, but the prescription strength anti-fungal ingredient is sometimes needed.  Pills are also available to treat certain types of fungal infections.

Some of the most common types of skin fungus are:

  • Athlete’s foot – Affects feet, typically affects males;
  • Jock itch – Affects groin area, typically affects males;
  • Tinea corporis – Affects trunk and extremities, typically affects females.

Skin fungus is easier to treat if you catch it early.  If you think you may have skin fungus, ask your physician or aesthetician to take a look.
